Golda’s Hot Air Balloon Ride

Posted on: December 1st, 2012 by Robin Carlisle No Comments

The air was crisp and the butterflies were fluttering in 97-year-old Golda Yates-Tylers stomach, but she was unwavering in her resolve to see her dream come true as she watched the hot air balloon inflate early Monday morning June 11th. Surrounded by friends, neighbors and associates at Christian Living Communities The Johnson Center Retirement Community, Golda fulfilled her long-pondered wish to float on the gentlest of breeze in a colorful balloon. With assistance from her daughter Ruleen and caregivers at The Johnson Center Golda made it across the lawn to the balloon and was lifted from her wheelchair into the basket. Conner, a Certified Nursing Associate, and Ruleen hopped in for the ride with Ken from Rocky Mountain Hot Air Balloon. With cheers of support coming from the crowd Golda was off the ground for the flight of a lifetime. A tethered brightly colored balloon lifted her up more than 30 feet off the ground. Over the buildings, over the trees she could clearly see the entire Front Range, downtown, Red Rocks and much, much more. The nerves quickly gave way to peace and enjoyment: "This is amazing a dream come true!" Golda remarked. Goldas dream came true through Christian Living Communities (CLC) Second Wind Dreams program. The national program trains senior care providers in how to find those often unexpressed dreams that if fulfilled, would enrich the lives of seniors living in retirement communities. When Golda found out that her dream was going to be …

Baby boomer caregiving: Elders’ money walks, financial abuse talks

Posted on: November 22nd, 2012 by Robin Carlisle No Comments

www.MindYourBody.tv with Stephanie Stephens for more how-to video episodes, audio podcasts and blogs on female baby boomer health and lifestyle topics, created especially for you. It can start so innocently. A caregiver—a relative or paid employee—has access to a seniors checkbook or other financial resources. As statistics prove, temptation is just too powerful and soon, financial abuse is underway, snowballing down the hill as it becomes an avalanche. As our newest video proves once again, your intuition is a powerful weapon. If you suspect that something "fishy" is going on, it probably is. Perhaps one of your siblings is dipping into the monetary pond, or if its an employee, you notice Moms nice jewelry is gone, or that theres been a boatload of withdrawals from the local ATM or a rash of credit card charges. When an elders cognition is compromised, the field is even riper for picking. Be on guard The MetLife Mature Market Institute has prepared a comprehensive resource of tips on this subject. Here are some basics to start 1) If one family member is taking care of finances for the senior, perhaps all of you will want to "double-check" to ensure all is well. Volunteer to "help provide back-up." Someone does need to monitor finances monthly. 2) Any decision that needs to be made in a hurry is suspect: Nothings that big of a rush. 3) Red flag any other changes in the elders usual banking habits, changes in a will or other main financial documents, or transfer of …

Unlocking the Keys to Social Impact Marketing: Reach People Where They Are and Speak Their Language

Posted on: November 19th, 2012 by Robin Carlisle No Comments

Unlocking the Keys to Social Impact Marketing: Speak Their Language We have previously discussed the importance of making cause and social marketing efforts relevant to consumers and "reaching people where they are" via our first whitepaper, the Six Pillars of Effective Cause Marketing. As we continue our work with corporations, nonprofit organizations and government entities to drive social change initiatives, it is clear that cause and social marketers must speak the language of those they are hoping to impact. Of course, by "speak their language," I dont mean cause and social marketers must reach target audiences in English, Spanish, French, etc. What I mean is the most effective behavior change marketers take the time to understand the cultures of the audiences they are looking to reach and develop social change campaigns to reflect the societal norms and positions of those audiences. They take time to discover the people, places and things that are relevant in the lives of their targets and the channels through which they will most effectively and favorably receive behavior change messages. Many years ago, we had the pleasure of working with the California Public Utilities Commission on its statewide Deaf and Disabled Telecommunication Program outreach and engagement effort. One of the primary target audiences the client identified was senior citizens, particularly those in assisted living facilities. Through research, Incite learned that one of the target …
