Summer Social Webshop 2012 Nancy Baym (@nancybaym), Microsoft Research New England Musicians are among the public figures who now have direct connections with audiences through social media. This talk will focus on 37 interviews with musicians about how that changes their experience and how they navigate the boundaries between fans and friends. In particular I will address methods for data collection and analysis when working with rich qualitative material concerning known individuals.
I talk with "Fats," the CEO of Coast2Coast Mixtapes and he shares both his method of email marketing and advice to independent artists looking to build fan lists. Major points to consider: 1. Dont steal e-mail addresses. Your true fans will opt-in (give you their email addresses willingly) to your email list. 2. Collect fan data on your website, when you perform at shows, etc. 3.Fans must be earned– give them something in return for opting into your email blast list. 4. First impressions cant be erased.
